The Illinois Suicide Prevention Strategic Committee was thrilled to welcome fifty-two people who attended the full-day Southern Illinois Suicide Prevention Summit in Carbondale. Forty people also participated in the two-hour training session from 3-5 p.m. on Suicide Prevention Training for CEU's.

The day began with a full breakfast and welcoming introductions. Judy Ashby, of LifeSavers in Carbondale, received a certificate of appreciation for her administrative skills in organizing this event. Judy presented the proclamation declaring the week of May 9-16, 2004 as Suicide Prevention Awareness Week in Carbondale issued from Mayor Bard Cole's office.

Representatives from area agencies met with members of the committee to explain the suicide prevention needs of Southern Illinois and to work on implementing the target objectives of the Illinois Plan as drafted by the full committee since its work began in the fall 2002.

Speaking directly for Mental Health Issues in rural Illinois were Sheila Simon, daughter of the late Paul Simon; Marcy Weber, Murphysboro High School, Murphysboro; Barb Elam, Wellness Center, SUIC; Joyce Lane, Division of Mental Health; Hugh Muldoon, University Christian Ministries, Carbondale; Pat Barber, Flora Chamber of Commerce, Flora.

Other agencies represented were: Murphysboro Health Center, Jackson County Health Department, Marion County Public Health, Springfield Department of Public Health, Union County Counseling, Hospice of Southern Illinois, Carbondale Adolescent Health Center, Southern Illinois Regional Social Services Memorial Hospital-Chester, Carbondale Women's Center, Johnson City Schools, Egyptian Health Department, Wabash County Health Department-Mt. Carmel, Minority Health Services-IDPH, Nursing-John Logan College, Consumer Specialist-IDPH- Carbondale, Carbondale Community High School, DCFS-Mt. Vernon, Perry County Counseling Center, West Frankfort High School.
